I've know about this place for a while now but I never really bothered going in because the parking lot was small and the road is busy..excuses excuses.. But I finally tried it and I have to say I was mad at myself for putting it off so long. A friend and I were both very impressed by the drinks. The store has such a peaceful atmosphere and the cashier was just so friendly it was amazing. I definitely will come back and definitely recommend stopping by

Really like this place - excellent coffee and espresso drinks, casual atmosphere, friendly people. During my recent 3-day weekend in SLC, i went here all 3 mornings. I wouldn't say it's the coziest place to hang out, kind of bare and they don't have great seating. But I still enjoyed sitting there with my coffee and reading the NY Times, provided by Alchemy. I'm a fan. I'll be back.

Had to do some laundry for the first time at a laundromat since I've moved here from California so I eventually decided on the one next door but that's an entirely different story. I was getting a little thirsty waiting on my clothes to dry so I decided to drop by at the "hippie coffee shop" next door that I read about on the laundromat's yelp page. Needless to say I was not disappointed. Being an avid iced tea drinker I was really hoping for a selection other than "we've got a green, a black, and an herbal" and they certainly provided. They have around 20 different teas. Of course they have the bland base flavors but a great selection of flavored teas (naturally not with flavored syrups or sugars ). The guy behind the counter (unfortunately I forgot to ask his name) was very nice and helpful. I noticed that they didn't have iced tea on their menu only the hot variety so when I asked he graciously told me that he would brew it hot and put it over ice for me. I was in the mood for green tea (like I always am) and he suggested the amaretto green that they have. It was very delicious. Not only did he know the teas he was working with but he knew that they were supplied from Tea Grotto just down the street (and he most likely got them a customer out of my girlfriend and myself). The tea only cost me 2.50 for a 20 oz and was perfect to quench my thirst but still give me a good flavor. I will be coming here every time I have some laundry to do and even on days I've got off and I'm out and about. Very glad to have found a coffee shop that has great teas and a nice atmosphere. I whole heartedly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys teas, hot or cold, and doesn't want to spend tea shop prices.

Fantastic place, nothing bad to eat on the menu at all! Some of the best, freshly-roasted beans I've ever had, I only wish they would sell beans over their website!

This place sells some excellent coffee. I usually just get regular coffee and it tastes almost like an espresso, due to its strength and richness. Yum! The setting is cool and the service is good. I dig it.

Their Chai Frappe is amazing, good vibe as well and they're breakfast sandwich is very good too

Although the interior didn't match our style with the skeleton designs, the flavor of the coffee delivered. Both had the espresso frappe which helped cool us down on a 100 degree day. Plus, the coffee gave us the jolt to continue our day of exploration. Went out of our way to find this place and it was worth it. Nice and relaxing atmosphere.

I've had chai, coffee, and a cappuccino here and all were good. Decent portions, though that's reflected in the price. They also do the old computer credit card sales thing where they swivel the screen around and expect you to add a $1, $2, $3 tip---this really annoys me when at that point, you haven't done anything outside the norm. for your job. I give you a tip and risk that your service will suck, which sometimes it does!

I grew up abstaining from coffee but have since been turned to the dark side with the help of great shops like this one! Alchemy is the best place to enjoy a perfectly steamed latte, or a quick Americano pick me up. Their spicy, dirty Chai is my favorite drink to sip while listening to live music and munching on their fresh basil-pesto rolls. The pastries and sweets are a great addition to any of their espresso drinks and always taste fresh. The inside is decked out in work done by local artists as well as exotic plants and small skull themed trinkets. It really gives the place a hip, relaxed energy that is perfect for doing homework or chatting with friends. While some have complained about the staff, I've never had a bad experience with service! I've always been greeted with a smile and pleasant conversation. The baristas really know how to make killer drinks fit to your individual preference. I buy bags of their coffee to brew at home so I never have to go a day without it!

Why are there skeletons adorning this cafe? Because once you taste their coffee, you'll drag your old bones out of bed to walk down the street in the dead of winter at 6 a.m. for a morning cup of their delicious coffee. And just like that, BAM, you're a morning person. Things to try on the menu: Sweet & Dirty Chai, Ham & Cheddar Quiche, and if you're celiac, get the GF muffins- they're made with so much love it actually hurts. Thank you Alchemy Coffee for being in my neighborhood and being the backdrop for break-ups, make-ups, boring work meetings, late-night study sessions, and awkward first dates. You da best.

I'll be honest here. I struggle with this place. It seems a lot like the hippie motif of the head shop next door has carried over into this, which I'm fine with and I really liked the eccentric decor, particularly the shelf full of books and maybe my judgment is skewed, but I think any self-respecting coffee shop should be able to brew at least a passable cup of tea. This place, however...probably depends on the person behind the counter. The one I got...not so good for that, though she was extraordinarily friendly. In fact, she's the major reason this got the push. Ok selection of subsidiary drinks, mostly Pelligrino sodas and they had some food, but no cool snacking stuff like cookies, etc., except for these kind of weird looking peanut bars that I elected not to chance. My distinct impression was that this was sort of a neighborhood chill place, which I'd probably consider, were I in the area (and after first teaching them how to make a proper cup of tea). As it was, this was just kind of there for me and I don't anticipate a return visit.

A lot of character in this place. With Beans & Brew and Starbucks over-taking many of these smaller places it's nice to see Alchemy still doing their thing. Went there for the first time on Saturday and decided to visit them again the next day. All their coffee selections are made well. Great tasting coffee, not burnt and their americanos are also good. They have a great selection of pastries and their croissants are tasty. A specialty item they serve is the Billy Holliday which is comprised of three different types of tea and has the aroma of lavender. Very smooth tasting and flavorful. Looking forward to going back and sitting outside when it's not wet outside.

Awesome coffee shop that's pretty hidden... I never would have found it if it weren't for yelp :) Coffee is great, they will serve in mugs which I love, and prices are pretty standard. What gives this place the five stars for me is the superb staff and awesome seating/ambiance. Ample seating (I didn't have to fight for a seat, which is more than I can say about some other coffee shops) and very unique art on the walls. The art is kind of dark in my opinion, but is balanced out by lots of color and thriving green plants. The kind of place I can sit, chat, and read a book. I must mention that I didn't even know this was the original alchemy coffee. I live on Capitol Hill and was thrilled when alchemy opened up inside em's. A different vibe for sure, but check out my other review for more :)

  • Nigel L.

I love Alchemy! Despite my limited drinking of heathen beverages (caffeine), they make a damn good mocha. Service has always been stellar; even when the place is full of folksy hipsters, they are never rude. Their pesto roll thing is incredible and comes with this dipping sauce that is slightly spicy. Sauce or not, make sure to get it toasted. The vibe is very relaxed; plenty of people working at the screenplay that will launch them into hollywood mixed with awkward first dates. The artwork hanging on the walls is pretty neat. My only gripe is that this place is a little small at times, but that should indicate that lots of people enjoy the beverages offered by this cafe.

  • Chris A.

Not awful, but third wave coffee this is not. Any place that doesn't know how to steam milk properly loses major points in my good... guys, its not that hard! Coffeegeek.com has tutorials. Watch them... Espresso was mediocre, cap was enormous and tasted like a mediocre at best lattee.

They make the most delicious chai in Salt Lake City. But unfortunately, I went in recently and was less than pleased. Typically when I walk in I am greeted by a friendly barista who then asks what I would like to order. This time, I was the one greeting the barista, who seemed less than pleased that he had to help yet another customer. I ordered my drink and while I was waiting for it, another employee walked by completely immersed in her phone (she didn't even look up long enough to make eye contact with me, I'm actually surprised she didn't walk into the wall). The drink was fine, but the service was weird and not pleasant. Also, they used to make the most amazing cranberry herb cream cheese which apparently they no longer do, and that's very disappointing.

A great little place with some of the friendliest service around. Coffee drinks are exceptional and they run a great open mic for musicians.

    (5)
  • Cheyenne S.

Love love love this shop. Stopped and was feeling risky and let the barista make me her choice based of the specifications that I wanted it iced. She made a Nina Simone and it was AWESOME. I also had a granola bowl that was extremely delicious. New fave for sure!

Really good cheese & tomato sandwich! I like all the various decor displayed. And I'm grateful this place supports art & music!

Everyone has their spot for coffee. While I make an effort to try out new shops, Alchemy is far and away my go-to for an espresso fueled fix. Nestled off 1700 S in Liberty Wells, Alchemy is a charming local shop with a friendly staff and inviting atmosphere. You'll find an eclectic mix of patrons at any time of day and you may even catch some live music from time to time. The coffee and espresso based drinks are all generally good and the staff is happy to accommodate requests on your drink order (milk choice, extra shots, etc). For a small shop they have a decent size menu of food choices. Baked goods, quiche, sandwiches, etc are all on offer and everything I've tried has been great. Vegans will appreciate that they carry some offerings from City Cakes. If ordering food, especially something that requires preparation, you'll probably have to wait a bit if they are busy. If maximum speed is part of your morning routine, you should probably stick to places with drive-up windows. I love having Alchemy as part of my neighborhood. Whether you live in the area or are just passing by, take a moment a treat yourself.

  • Brian Jr O.

Service was fast and friendly, but my flavored mocha latte tasted like coffee flavored milk. The beans seemed decent, but the drink was pretty disappointing.

  • Libby G.

I'm not vegan but I love everything I've ever tasted at alchemy, their coffee, pasteries, and any other various snacks I've tried over the years. They're way better than beans and brews which is the other coffee within walking distance. The only thing that's disappointing is they were not easy to work with when ordering coffee for the office, the employees always seemed put out by an order of eight drinks, forcing us to go somewhere else.

I had to drive down to Sugarhouse for a doctors appointment at 8:00 am! So I had to make a decision based off of time that things were open. I stopped in at another shop that was closer to the doctors office, but was very disappointed by the breakfast food options and left. Alchemy was a little further away, but I had read reviews and figured it was worth the drive. I'm glad I did, the selection of pastries and breakfast options went above as beyond some of the other coffee shops in the area and I dug the vibe. I tried the oatmeal which was served with a fresh assortment of berries, banana and apples. The cinnamon on top, brown sugar, and warm milk on the side was a nice addition. I was particularly impressed with the coffee, I had a nice medium roast from Salt Lake Coffee roasters that was perfectly brewed. The lovely barista was trying to get her dark roast brew just right and, as I was sitting at the bar and drinking my coffee black, she had me taste test her brew until she got it how she wanted it. I will certainly be back!

Didn't like the mochas. We ended throwing them away because they were so milky and bland. And contrary to another review our mochas weren't sweet at all!

The quintessential neighborhood coffee shop. Great local vibe, quality beans, and solid pastries. This place is known for its people. Everyone is welcoming and knowledgeable. Big fan of the Kona beans they brew along with the house blend. Great selection of teas as well. Jason is great. His whole crew is solid.

Delish coffee, friendly staff, & a cute character...need I say more? The location feels a bit strange though.

One of my all time favorites in Salt Lake. Have been there many times and played many shows. The food great and a nice selection of teas. I always enjoy seeing different art on the walls when I'm there. Nice people.

  • Val D.

Great atmosphere and delicious food. I purchased a breakfast sandwich on a croissant with orange juice. The ingredients were great and the juice was fresh. The total was $11.50 - $2.50 for the juice and $9 for the sandwich. I'd expect to pay that price at an airport, but for a coffeeshop $9 was $2 too much. The ingredients are great but don't justify the price. I wouldn't let that deter you from studying here or using this space to catch up with a friend. It's a fun place with nice seating and has unique, local artisan crafts you can buy for birthday gifts.

Wow! That's about the most I can say! Hands down the best drinks on our entire trip! Michelle is a fantastically talented barista. My wife's Macchiato is probably the best she has ever had. I got a Chai and it was outstanding. The quality of their products is amazing. We split a pesto roll which was really good, and I'm not a huge pesto fan. It came with this spicy aoli which was excellent. Sad that we don't live here to become regulars.

What a wonderful coffee shop. It has everything you'd want in a coffee shop. The staff is fun and friendly, the coffee is the best around (no really, the coffee here is amazing), the atmosphere is so relaxing. They play great music and have great wifi. Their vegan options for food are amazing, best gluten free muffins I've ever had. All in all, if you live close to an alchemy, it should be your coffee shop =)

Staying in Salt Lake City for a few days and wanted to find a local coffee shop before heading out for the day. Alchemy looked like it had a cool local vibe, so decided to check it out. Surrounding area is sort of run down suburbia, but when you see the coffee shop on the corner, it sort of just fits. Everyone seems very relaxed, one guy walked in and left his dog to hang out outside while he grabbed a coffee. Something you just don't see in Connecticut. Inside vibe was relaxed and inviting. Music, lamps, brick walls, enough seating for 15 - 20 or so ppl. Ordered their medium roast coffee and a gluten free pumpkin muffin. Both were delicious and complimented the rainy morning in SLC. Baristas were knowledgeable and very friendly as well. Glad I checked it out and I think I'll be back for round two tomorrow..

  • Lorrie M.

This is definitely a cute little coffee shop that has a lot of character, and a great place to come relax, hang out, read a book or study. However, I just can't seem to get over their coffee. I really think for a place like this, the coffee is quite mediocre hence the three star rating. They do have a parking lot, and are sort of in an obscure part of town that is a little far away from the general downtown area. They sometimes only have one person behind the counter so it may take a little longer for you to get your order in, let alone get out of there with your order to go. The seating inside is limited, but like I said, casual, cozy, great hang out.

  • Melissa Y.

$6.48 for a 1/2 pound of organic coffee... What?! Nothing compares to this place. Originally was drawn in because of the laundromat next door, but fell in love with the aesthetic of Alchemy and the quality of their coffee. If you support local and organic, this spot is for you.

Didn't order any coffee - but the food was great. Tasty tuna melt and the quinoa was funky delicious. Service was friendly and the ambiance was calming. My girlfriend got a tomato and cheese panini with basil pesto. I ate most of it because I'm selfish, but it was great. I'll be eating there again sooner than later.

    (4)
  • Samantha F.

Alchemy has some pretty good drinks at reasonable prices. Their apple turnovers are awesome and the baristas are willing to heat up any of the pastries for you. My favorite thing about this place is the wall art. They feature different artists every month.

Alchemy Coffee is the first coffee shop I ever hit up in Salt Lake City, and for that, it will always hold a special place in my heart. Decorated with a mix of skeletons and plants, this place gives off a mysterious transmuting vibe to perfectly compliment it's name. The staff is friendly to customers and it is obvious they have a great working relationship as one staffie proclaimed "I love you guys" to his co-workers as he left work. I had a coffee and the Chicken Curry Sand complete with a side of quinoa. If you like quinoa you HAVE to try this. The sandwich was perfectly seasoned with curry, not too much, not to little and had an interesting mix of veggies and maybe even craisins, which I normally don't love in things but it just worked here. The quinoa had a mix of veggies with a tad bit of feta. I think I'll be back just to have that delicious sandwich. Another nice thing about this place... they offer a partial "warm up" to your coffee for $1 or a full refill if you are feeling the need to caffeinate. The customers seemed to know the employees, which tells me it is such a great place that they tend to get a lot of regulars. Check it out, you're sure to come away with a good attitude and full belly.

WHY OH WHY are you in Salt Lake City and not San Diego. So, as some of you have read, one of my all time favorite sushi places happens to be in SLC. Now one of my absolute favorite coffee joints is in SLC. There coffee here is amazing. There food is amazing and there service and down to earth and cheerful. They have it all and they believe in organic and local businesses. How can you go wrong? If I lived in SLC this would absolutely be my second home.

  • McKenna G.

I could stay here for hours and do work...the vibe and people make you feel comfy able and relaxed. Also those mochas are the absolute BEST. Also love how they support local business posters in the back.

Heard a band playing out side totally awesome they were btw. So I got a chai latte it was alright. Also got some Italian soda for the kids awful they wouldn't even drink them. They normally love that stuff . Would I come back . For the band yes tupelomoan they rock ! If there playing I'd buy another chai latte . But no show no go

Ok so I have become addicted to alchemy-- the food, people, and sevice keep draggin me back. Who doesn't love chillin with a variety of interesting unique people with style (in other words 'hipsters') - the environment and vibe are unique with it's eclectic mix of furniture and decorations. Comfy couches to chill and sip your delicious coffee. The art and design of the place is how all coffee shops should be. The skeletons around do stare at me while I'm eating but I kind of like it I've tried a variety of their food items and like I said in my tip, the quiche is the seeesshhh- that's a definite must. They have great mix of toppings on their sammiches which make them excellent- try the turkey and you won't regret it. (If u don't know what a sammich is then look it up on urban dictionary you ignorant swine) Watch out though, it's popular and the crowds can come in herds. It does get a little slow during lunch from the popularity but that is no reason to take off a star. The baristas work their ass off to make the best coffee and food for you so be patient, and wait your turn. It's worth it. Try it. U won't regret it. Nomnomnomnom

I stopped by here last week with my fiance for an afternoon pick me up and to waste a little time. We were in town for the weekend and ended up finding this place through Yelp asI am pretty sure that we would not have otherwise. The inside of the coffee shop had a sort of industrial feel to it but also ended up being a bit artsy as there were pieces of art for sale all around the shop. There was also the usual coffee bar, comfortable area with overstuffed couch and chairs and then a number of tables. The barrista seemed nice and for my coffee I decided to stray from my normal Americano and went with a large iced drip coffee while my fiance went with the green tea. The iced coffee was pretty strong and tasted nicely while my fiance loved her green tea. The bottom line from me is that I would head back here again in the future. I loved the feel of the space and felt welcome here while both my fiance and I enjoyed our drinks.

The service here is terrible! The people appeared annoyed with having to serve me and the coffee was burnt! I live close and would love to come here but I have tried it so many times and the coffee and service ace bitter. I will never come here again

Moved from San Francisco a year ago. I finally found Alchemy thanks to a friend. There are some coffee places here that make Starbucks look good. Beans&Brews tastes like poison. That's not an exaggeration. It is hands down, the worst coffee I've ever tasted. So anyways.... Alchemy.... Loved the vibe, nice mellow barista, & absolutely fantastic COFFEE. YAY!!!!!! Thank you baby Jesus, I honestly almost started to cry. Salvation.

Very cool little coffee and beverage house. You can tell the owners really put their love behind everything from the ambiance to the coffee.

Great coffee, excellent service and awesome, comfortable environment. Definitely one of the best houses I've been to in a long time. Reminds me of what a neighborhood coffee house used to be.

Great food, okay coffee. The workers are cute. Decor is awesome. But if I go to another coffee shop where I can see that the coffee beans in their espresso machine's hopper are expired... Well, I won't go back!

This place has amazing wall art and perfect for chilling. Bring a book or take one from their selection. Guatemalan coffee was amazing. Its small but in a nice area of Sugarhouse not too close to the high traffic areas. Small interesting stores close by.

Felt the need to find a yummy coffee shop for when I'm not close to the one near me. This place is great! I was craving a drink I had in California and this place came pretty dang close! The barista was super nice and made some great suggestions when I mentioned this was my first time to the place. Try the sweet potato muffin! Definitely coming back!

It was my first time here a few days ago and I loved them! They know how to sling drinks well and the barista was awesome and helpful. The atmosphere is chill and inviting with some sweet rustic tones. Go Alchemy!

In a land of not many choices for the healthy eater, I stumbled into this place along my travels. I called in beforehand to place an order and they had all of the things I love... Free range organic eggs, lotsa veggies and fruit and even gluten free bread! My fiancé loved their pesto and avacado especially. The owner and his co-worker were super nice and the double shot of espresso was simply amazing. Just what I needed before a long drive back to Colorado. This place has true love in what they offer... I feel nourished and healthy. Whenever I come back to SLC, I will 100% be back to visit!

  • Melissa E.

Love this local coffee shop! Great vegan options and drink selections. Cozy atmosphere with small outside seating area. Only downside...expect a wait to be served if there's more than 2 in line. Not the fastest service but very friendly. Art work and decor interesting.

  • Sally H.

I can't believe it took me this long to go here! This is one of my new favorites. Quirky decor, friendly service and excellent coffee and pastries. Pastries are hit and miss around here and this coffee shop knows what they are doing. Love this place.

  • Alexi A.

Great vibe, friendly staff. The turkey sandwich was delicious! And I had the best dirty chai I've ever had anywhere! off the beaten path, in a residential area, so it's super relaxing... highly recommended!

  • Mandy S.

Consistently good coffee. Good pastries. My only complaint is I wish it was not so freaking cold in there during the winter. Why do they have the air conditioning on????

  • John O.

I like this place. A chillax coffee house to sit back and relax, read a book, people watch. Could be a tad bigger, but still quite nice. Good coffee (a small coffee in a mug costs .93 c plus tax). The muffins were quite nice although a little on the pricey side $3.25 p tax. All in all, a nice place to sit for an hour , read the paper, surf the web, drink coffee, and "hipster" watch. Good vibe.

    (4)
  • Deserae D.

Quirky, and fun ambiance that invites you to stay a while. The quiche is a homemade slice like nothing else I've had. I also hear the coffee's good.

    (4)
  • Felipe Z.

I liked how many seats and couches it had. Some outside seating and a chill vibe and crowd. I thought it was a bit overpriced, but the service was great and it was nice and cool, which was perfect for how hot it was outside. I think everyone should go try it once, but I don't think I'd become a regular here anytime soon.

  • Vince C.

Cool vibe, ambient music, and a wonderful selection of coffee and munchables. I stopped by during my trip to the laundromat to pick up a small snack and maybe a beverage. Yelp said they were open until 9:30pm so 8 o'clock shouldn't have been a problem, but it almost was. Fortunately, the man running the shop, Soren(sp? ), was kind enough to allow me to give it a shot before he locked up. The food items looked delicious, but none tickled my fancy and I wasn't in the mood for a cup of coffee, so I asked him about the beans for sale. He was able to point out a roast I might like and hooked me up with a punch card (Buy 10lbs, get 1 free). We'll see how the coffee turns out; for service they get an A+.

  • Keyan P.

Cute place, great vibe and music. Not a shop I would study at due to the lack of couch chairs/outlets but definitely somewhere I would meet a friend to hang out with at. The cafe uses Salt Lake City Roasting Co. Coffee beans which I'm a fan of, and the food menu had a large variety of choices including sandwiches and pastries. Not to mention really friendly service. I will be back!

Passing through to airport and stopped at this cool little joint. Iced coffee- yum! Quick service, friendly staff, great coffee!

    (5)
  • Parker S.

Scone was great. Americano was mediocre. They use SLCRoasters so it's not entirely their fault. Cute gypsy feel to the joint. Staff was very kind! That being said, I'll give em a try again.

2 people should know what you want when you walk in. Your bartender and your barista. Not a coffee drinker, but I love my chia. I do ship their coffee to my family in Missouri and they love it! Try the ham and cheese croissant toasted. Tasty.

  • Tins Y.

I am a mocha person, and Alchemy's mocha can really make my day! However, I always ask for less sweet, maybe 1/2 even 1/4 of what they usually do for mocha, therefore, I never know how sweet is their regular mocha. The price is pretty reasonable, maybe even a little cheaper than some of the big name coffee shops in town. Besides coffee, their pastries are good, too. First of all, you want to dine in, because not only will they toast it and slice it for you, they will also add their signature sauce, which is really good with their pesto rolls and croissants. If you want to take out, adding the sauce will require extra $$. The store will also add some fruit on your plate if you dine in! It's almost a complete meal, not to mention the pesto roll and the croissants are as big as the entire plate! They seem to serve variety of tea, but I haven't try it yet. Maybe one day when I am tired of their mocha?! The seating area is very limited, but very unique. No 2 tables are the same.

Excellent coffee! The comfy looking couches are always full of happy customers. Staff is very friendly. The sandwiches I've tried have left something to be desired, though. The grilled PB&J sounds amazing but is only okay. Really would be better constructed on two pieces of toast for texture, and is the epitome of an item just as easily made at home. The breakfast croissant had good flavors, but smashing it in a panini press defeats the purpose of using a light, flaky croissant--again, a texture thing. Those couple critiques aside, this is definitely a good coffee shop with a fun theme that will draw my business anytime I happen to visit SLC.

As far as coffee shops go, you can't really beat Alchemy Coffee. +1 that they are a local company too. If you are looking for Starbucks, you won't find it here. The atmosphere here is super chill and the crew has always been super helpful and polite. You can tell they take pride in the Alchemy brand and will go out of their way to make your experience enjoyable. I recommend this place to coffee drinkers and non alike as there are plenty of options for everyone's tastes. Their menu is full of food options outside the beverage realm if you're looking for a quick bite. Take the time to find this hidden gem.

Came here while visiting from out of town in search of a local coffee place. We loved it! Fun atmosphere, small and cozy, great art on the walls. Customer service was great, nice selection of loose tea and yummy pastries.

Good coffee, great atmosphere. Lots of outdoor seating, and a bunch of cozy sofas and tables for getting work done. Got a cafe mocha, which was quite good (not too sweet, as seems to be the trend at most places).

Visiting this place from out of town. Ordered the Nina Simone, pumpkin muffin, Italian sodas for my boys with a chocolate chip cookie. None of these we're particularly good. A little spendy, staff and ambience is pretty granola. Clearly a local scene for those into it. I wasn't.

Great, cute coffee place in Liberty Wells neighborhood. The drinks are awesome and the service is pretty great. The baristas are super friendly and helpful. I wish this place was closer to where I lived. I haven't tried the food yet, but it looks pretty good. Comfy seating, good place to do homework. Can get pretty busy.

I love alchemy so much. Delicious organic coffee prepared with the skill and care that it deserves. The food is exquisite, and beautifully presented. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and attentive and the location is great. It's a rare gem in a desert of half-assery.

Best little coffee shop around. Fantastic, friendly staff, yummy snacks and sandwiches, and oh, the best coffee. Never had a bad cup. Local ownership has friends stopping in all the time to say hi, and they'll take the time so get to know their regulars. Doesn't get much better than Alchemy!

Adorable. How, Alchemy, did i only hear about you AFTER I moved away to cold, chai-less DC? How!??? Though I am a huge fan of Sugarhouse Chai, Alchemy's was even better. It was Sugarhouse's chai on its best day. I couldn't tell the taste apart too much, it was just..smoother, more consistent, ...just, better. Sorry Sugarhouse! (A note- they have two chai's. I wasn't sure which one to get so I asked for the one that is known as the 'best chai ever.' I believe it was the sweet chai, or something like that.) However, unlike SH Coffee, this place has very little seating. I came on a night with live music and ended up having to leave so I could talk with my friends, there just wasn't enough room for us to sit down. However, the atmosphere was very nice, and my barista was as well. if only it existed where I live now.. :(

This is really nice place. I can't even come up with something to complain about. My latte was great and service was outstanding. Can't say I am going to become a regular at this place as it is a bit out of my regular route, but definitely will come back.

It always kinda bugs me when a server takes your whole party's order without writing anything down. What are they trying to prove here? What gets me more is when they Biff after doing that. (Biff = F it up) So we didn't get exactly the coffee drinks we ordered here but it wasn't like it was the end of the world or anything. The barista is good at making coffee drinks. They have a nice variety of pastries and tastie viddles. The vibe in there is artsy/eclectic people come and hang out in an old fashioned living room.

Alchemy is the ancient pseudoscience of turning lead into gold. This coffee shop tried unsuccessfully to turn lead into coffee. Coffee should be mellow, relaxing, and yummy. This place uses Salt Lake Roasting coffee which is harsh, tacky, and upsetting. It's got all the bitter bite of Statbucks, with added funkiness. I asked for "the lighter" blend. It tastes like aged Sumatran mixed with sweatsock tea. The atmosphere is cool and they're playing Old Willie Nelson, so I'll stick it out. You're better off at starbucks. If you like bitter, overbrewed swill coffee, you'll love Alchemy.

There is a taxonomy of coffeehouses. There are national chains (Starbucks); regional chains (Peet's); local chains (Beans & Brews); local non-neighborhood shops (Cafe D'Bolla, RoCo); and local neighborhood shops (Nobrow, Alchemy). Each has their own model for sourcing coffee. D'Bolla sources and roasts their own; Nobrow buys from Intelligentsia in Chicago. With that in mind...Alchemy is local neighborhood shop on 1700 South and 400 East. They source locally from RoCo (who sources an roasts their own). Alchemy has a very strong neighborhood vibe to it. The guys behind the counter know most of their customers by name--their fav drinks too. They are friendly to non-regulars too, so have no fear about walking in uninitiated. The setup inside has areas where friends or regulars can hang and chat. There is a minimum amount of privacy though. If you want anonymity or distance then you better go to Coffee Connection! The crowd is an interesting mix: students, locals, old, young. It's eclectic without feeling trendy or like a scene. Comparison: I much prefer the vibe at Alchemy to Nobrow. Nobrow seems self-conscious where Alchemy is just mellow. There are often spirited discussions going on at Alchemy. Join or ignore! The coffee and teas drinks at Alchemy are very good. They aren't epic--if you want a PhD go to D'Bolla. They do offer some interesting "house" drinks (Ginger Rogers, Nina Simone, etc). They have a case of local baked goods, and they have a small menu of sandwiches and salads. (I've not had any of it.) Their prices are very fair--a large latte is $3.25. My one nitpick with Alchemy is the music. The owner has decent taste in music, and he picks the playlist. After some frustration I inquired--he is often using a Pandora playlist. The culprit! I personally despise Pandora and would take last.fm or slacker or any other online music streamer over it. Pandora's idiotic rubric for choosing songs really grates my ears after a while. The jumps in genre and style make no sense whatsoever. So when I hang at Alchemy I eventually have to don the headphones.

This is my absolute favorite coffeehouse in Salt Lake. The staff is friendly and unpretentious and the atmosphere is very down-to-earth and local. It's eclectic without being over the top. The drinks and food are great as well. Even without being vegan, I LOVED the vegan brownie they have! In defense of the music, it's great! and although sometimes there is a Pandora station playing, the owner often brings in his own music (especially vinyl) to play while he's working. I love that they have events going on weekly (poetry readings, music, etc...) and that you can go there on mornings when the owner is working, not know what you want, and he'll whip you up something fantastic. This is a great neighborhood place! But be forwarned, it can be very busy in the mornings, and with only two people at the counter and limited space, one can be served slowly.

My friend who lives about 2 blocks from here took me to his favorite coffee shop when I came to Utah for a visit this past weekend. I like the funky atmosphere and felt at home amongst the tattooed and pierced crowd but it wasn't as if they would EXclude you for any reason either way. The place is small and eclectic with tasty coffee drinks and pastries. I had the mexican wedding cookie and scones. I dont think they make them there but wherever they get them from does a good job! The guys are super nice and cool and easy-going, just like baristas should be. They were busy Saturday afternoon but 3 of us still got a seat at the counter but it was really chill at 8 this morning while my friend and I killed time before he had to drop me at the airport. I hope if I ever come back to Utah this place is still around!

I am not a coffee drinker, however, my husband is. We used to live a few blocks from this shop and would walk over often. He enjoyed the coffee and I enjoyed the bakery items. I got a slice of their carrot cake and it was the best carrot cake I had ever tasted! It was on my mind so much that I went back the next day for a slice and found out it was a vegan carrot cake. The icing (which I never could have guessed was vegan) was delicious. Very chill vibe. The staff is very freindly, too!

OK, so I'm not a coffee drinker. But, there is one factor that Alchemy has has earned my devoted loyalty: customer service. The guys who work there are seriously cool cats. Case 1: by my second visit they remembered what I ordered: "Medium soy chai, iced, with cinnamon on top again?" Case 2: the third time I ever was there, they had some live music going. I really wanted to buy the musician's cd, but had no cash. When we asked the clerk if there was an ATM around, he gave us $10 out of his own pocket, and wouldn't take no for an answer. When I went back a few days later to repay him, I (almost literally) had to twist the guys arm to take the money. They have a fairly good selection of teas & herbal teas, as well as lots of coffees, but I have to say the vegan brownies are probably my favorite item they sell.

Alchemy is an ideal indie/neighbourhood coffee shop. Comfy and varied indoor/outdoor seating, hassle-free internets, colourful clientele, easy parking, good coffee. Not only is this place oozing with indie borderline happy gothic coffee houseness, but it has a fabulous selection of caffeinated, non-caffeinated, and vegan goodies. I had the pleasure of enjoying a vegan pumpkin muffin and a non-fat latte. The muffin had a delicious pumpkin spice taste and sweet topping. I find that Salt Lake City Roasting company has variable coffee bean taste, but Alchemy was able to brew it just right to bring out the flavor. This place is definitely worth the stop by and sit. Plus, you can bring your receipt next door to the tattoo parlor and get a discount on your Halloween tattoo that you've always wanted!

This place sells some excellent coffee. I usually just get regular coffee and it tastes almost like an espresso, due to its strength and richness. Yum! The setting is cool and the service is good. I dig it.

Love love love this shop. Stopped and was feeling risky and let the barista make me her choice based of the specifications that I wanted it iced. She made a Nina Simone and it was AWESOME. I also had a granola bowl that was extremely delicious. New fave for sure!

One of my all time favorites in Salt Lake. Have been there many times and played many shows. The food great and a nice selection of teas. I always enjoy seeing different art on the walls when I'm there. Nice people.

$6.48 for a 1/2 pound of organic coffee... What?! Nothing compares to this place. Originally was drawn in because of the laundromat next door, but fell in love with the aesthetic of Alchemy and the quality of their coffee. If you support local and organic, this spot is for you.

  • Samantha F.

Alchemy has some pretty good drinks at reasonable prices. Their apple turnovers are awesome and the baristas are willing to heat up any of the pastries for you. My favorite thing about this place is the wall art. They feature different artists every month.

Heard a band playing out side totally awesome they were btw. So I got a chai latte it was alright. Also got some Italian soda for the kids awful they wouldn't even drink them.

Salvation.

Love this local coffee shop! Great vegan options and drink selections. Cozy atmosphere with small outside seating area. Only downside...expect a wait to be served if there's more than 2 in line. Not the fastest service but very friendly. Art work and decor interesting.

I can't believe it took me this long to go here! This is one of my new favorites. Quirky decor, friendly service and excellent coffee and pastries. Pastries are hit and miss around here and this coffee shop knows what they are doing. Love this place.

Good vibe.

    (5)

  • Chris F.

Visiting this place from out of town. Ordered the Nina Simone, pumpkin muffin, Italian sodas for my boys with a chocolate chip cookie. None of these we're particularly good. A little spendy, staff and ambience is pretty granola. Clearly a local scene for those into it. I wasn't.

Awesome coffee. Great ambiance. Wished I lived in SLC to come here more often.
